Mass vs niche

Mass media is when they’re is a huge audience that will do something or watch something because it is big and everybody else is watching it

Niche media is when its usually a smaller audience but they are more passionate about something and will buy extras etc

Uses and gratifications

This theory suggests people use media texts for various reasons which are:

Diversion

To escape from everyday life

Personal identity

To create they’re own identities from characters in media texts

Personal relationships

Use media texts for emotion and other social values/interaction

Surveillance

To gain information or knowledge

Entertainment

As a means of relaxation, enjoyment and emotional release

Barthes narrative codes

Barthes said that codes were used in film to try and give the viewer a clue on what happened next in the scene
The first code is action code, this makes the viewer think what is logically the next step, it also can indicate that the scene is going to contain some sort of action in it, we used this in our film when brad opened the door, the viewer knew that he was going to enter the room

The second code is the mystery or enigma code, this is used to explain a narrative whilst still controlling how much information the audience is given, its used to grab the audiences attention by setting up a problem which is then later solved if you keep watching, we used this in our preliminary task when I said 'that's too bad' which gives off the sense that something nad was about to happen to the protagonist

The next code is the semic code, this is when the director uses a symbol to give off a feeling of what is going to happen for example if they use the anarchy symbol, it makes you think that a riot or something is going to happen

The 4th  is the cultural code, this is used to show the class or wealth of the characters and helps with the mise en scene, it makes a reference from the world that the viewer can relate to or will recognise for example Aston martins in james bond show that he is wealthy

The last code is the code of opposites, this is when the narrative relies on binary opposites such as black v white, we used this in our preliminary task when the antagonist was wearing dark clothes compared to the protagonist who wears a lighter outfit which shows who is a 'goody' and who is a 'baddy'
